The number of illegal immigrants from Mexico dropped from 7 million in 2007, a peak, to 6.1 million in 2011. The report attributes the drop to the drastic decline in birthrates in Mexico, the increasingly dangerous passage across the border, and the flagging American economy. A higher percentage of deported migrants now say in surveys that they will not attempt to come back into the United States (compared to 10 years ago).

I'd say the "flagging American economy" is the primary reason and this is something I've been telling people for a couple years would start to occur.

Thanks for the post Rroush.

This is another subject which I would have liked to touch on, but never had any "lead in" to do so. I would totally agree with you that this report should have REVERSED the order of its reasons - as "flagging economy" is CLEARLY what has caused the biggest drop-off...although the Fascist laws being directed against "illegal aliens" (i.e. human beings) is also a deterrent.

The INTERESTING part of this report is the note about the Mexican birth-rate. Note that contrary (yet again) to mainstream mythology, poverty CAUSES people to have large families (rather than the other way around).

Here is how the dynamic works. In the poorest societies there is INEVITABLY the highest infant mortality rates (not to mention the highest child-birth mortality rates). Thus in the poorest countries families have 5 or 6 kids hoping that (at least) 2 or 3 will SURVIVE - and thus be able to help provide for their parents in their old age (since poor nations have no PENSION systems).

So what the "sudden drop" in Mexico's birthrate says to me is "prosperity". In other words, the declining Mexican birthrate affects immigration to the U.S. not because (eventually) there will be less bodies (LOL!!), but because they don't NEED/WANT to go to the crumbling U.S. economy to earn a living when they can stay at home and DO BETTER.

Just like judges in the US used to give "kids" the option of jail or the military, maybe in the not to distant future Mexican judges will give people the option of jail or go to the US LOL

There is CLEARLY the potential to generate a LOT of laughs out of this "reversal of fortunes"...
