Chad,

Great post and links.

I want to add- this "system" is proficient in "repeat customers".

If you ever watched the movie the "Longest Yard", the prison (based in Florida) had the guards football team.

In fact, in Florida, there was a huge scandal of prison guards and steroid use. It was revealed it was for there softball teams/league. The prisons had tendencies to hire semi pro baseball players. So they take there softball pretty serious.

Of course, they removed the softball fields at the prisons in our surrounding area.

Then, there was the wardens payola scandal (kickbacks), from outside vendors (concessions).

There are drugs that get into prisons. One guess how they get there. That's another topic, for another day.

Thank You

Thanks to all who voted!

However I hope you won't you get mad at me when I say that after reading Chad's post on the U.S.'s massive, prison POPULATION; then it's obvious that the right/best title for this piece is:

The U.S. Prison-Cell Economy

There Are Now More Americans In Jail Than There Were In Stalin's Gulag Archipelago

There are now more Americans in jail -- 6 million -- than there were in Stalin's Gulag, reports Fareed Zakaria, in a column called "Incarceration Nation." And it's not just a relative population thing.

The U.S. has 760 prisoners per 100,000 citizens.
How does that compare to other countries?
It's 7X-10X as high:

Japan has 63 per 100,000,
Germany has 90 per 100,000
France has 96 per 100,000
South Korea has 97 per 100,000
Britain has 153 per 100,000

And it's also a relatively new phenomenon: In 1980, the U.S. only had 150 prisoners per 100,000 citizens.

What's to blame?
The "War on Drugs."

More than half of America's 6 million prisoners are in jail for drug convictions, with 80% of those in jail for "possession."

By the way, has the "war on drugs" worked?
Um, no.

There are still drugs everywhere.

So, maybe it's time we stopped throwing people in the slammer for possessing them.
Read Fareed Zakaria's column here >

Zakaria: Incarceration nation: globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2012/03...ncarceration-nation/

Oops! I had to edit this as I got my numbers wrong...

Fareed Zakaria LEFT OUT the prison numbers for one, notable nation:
Canada. I knew the number was very high, so I went looking for it myself:

131 per 100,000

Well, have a look everyone:

The U.S. Prison-Cell Economy

After all, I spent hours that I would have normally spent on the forum this weekend doing RESEARCH on this one. It's almost as interesting to note what I couldn't find rather than what I did uncover...

Hint: the U.S. government apparently doesn't want ANYONE to know how many THOUSANDS of private prisons currently exist in the U.S.
